Initial Post Instructions
This week you will read about architecture. The lesson includes information on Roman architecture, which was greatly influenced by the Greeks and Etruscans.
Locate at least two architectural works that were influenced by Greco-Roman architecture. These can be from any time period after the Greco-Roman period but should be from different periods themselves (e.g., one from Renaissance and one from Baroque). Then address the following:
What is the function of each structure?
How does each work exhibit influence of the Greco-Roman period? Is the influence specifically Greek, Etruscan, or Roman – or a combination?
How would you compare the two selected works? Take the role of the evaluative critic.
Use examples from the text, the lesson, and the library to help support your answer. Please remember to provide images and citations to help illustrate your points.
Follow-Up Post InstructionsRespond to at least two peers or one peer and the instructor. Further the dialogue by providing more information and clarification.
Minimum of 3 posts (1 initial & 2 follow-up)
Minimum of 2 sources cited (assigned readings/online lessons and an outside source)
APA format for in-text citations and list of references

Welcome to Week 3! You may begin posting on Monday, January 20 for credit. This week we will be learning more about classical architecture. The word “classical†in this context refers to the Greeks and Romans.
As you begin your research this week I recommend these two sources which can be located in the online library. Be sure that you are incorporating concepts and ideas from your textbook and at least one other scholarly source:
Nicholls, M. (2015, 02). Origins of classical architecture: Architecture temples, orders and gifts to the gods in ancient Greece. History Today, 65, 64.
Sankovitch, A. (1998). Structure/ornament and the modern figuration of architecture. The Art Bulletin, 80(4), 687-717.
You may want to consider the following concepts or questions in the discussion this week as well:
The classical style of architecture is still used today. It can be seen in many buildings, such as the White House, the Pantheon in Paris, any probably some buildings in your own home town! What is it about classical architecture styles that are so enduring? What does this style of architecture represent in our culture?
Consider the relationship between Greek architecture and Roman architecture. Did the Romans come up with any new architectural techniques or did they mainly copy Greek styles?
Remember to use an outside resource in the main post, which needs to be on or before Wednesday. Don’t forget to look over the discussion rubric as a reference when you are writing your discussion posts. If you have any questions, please post in the Q&A forum or email me.
